Don and Laureen Grebien
On Monday, June 28, the first day of the three-day candidate filing period, Don Grebien filed his declaration of candidacy in City Hall, accompanied by his wife, Laureen, to run for Mayor of Pawtucket. Grebien said later, “I’m looking forward to bringing my message to the voters that it’s time for a new direction in Pawtucket and outlining my vision for a better future for the city.”
Grebien also announced a rally will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday (June 29) at campaign headquarters, at 189 Exchange St. downtown, to outline the campaign’s goals and how they will be achieved. The public is invited.
A lifelong Democrat, Grebien, a former City Councilor whose working career has been spent in private industry, will be competing in the expected Democratic primary set for Sept. 14. The party endorsement vote process by the six District Ward Committees will be conducted Wednesday (June 30).
Election rules call for candidate nomination papers to be picked up by July 7 and returned to the local Board of Canvassers by 4 p.m. July 16. The nominating signatures of 200 registered qualified voters in the city are required to run for mayor.
According to the state Board of Elections, there are 21,153 registered Democratic voters in the city, along with 2,267 registered Republicans, 14 Moderates and 14,258 Independent (unaffiliated) voters, for a total of 37,692 registered voters in the city.
