Statement by RI-CAN Executive Director Maryellen Butke on Governor Chafee’s Board of Regents Nominees:
Maryellen Butke
“Leadership matters in education. The people in these positions matter, and we need leaders committed to the transformation of public schools begun in the past year by Education Commissioner Deborah Gist and the Board of Regents. RI-CAN and the burgeoning education reform movement in Rhode Island will be closely watching the actions of the new Board members to make sure we don’t jeopardize our $75 million in Race to the Top funds or our children’s future.”
About RI-CAN: Launched in December 2010, RI-CAN (the Rhode Island Campaign for Achievement Now, pronounced rye-can) is an education reform advocacy organization building a movement of Rhode Islanders creating the political will to enact smart public policies to ensure that every Rhode Island child has access to a great public school.
