Families First RI was the fortunate recipient of $3,500 from proceeds raised from the first Rhode Island LUNAFEST presented to a sold-out crowd at the Tazza Café in downtown Providence. The Providence LUNA Chix, a local women’s running club, was inspired to bring LUNAFEST to Providence to raise awareness of women’s issues on a local level. All proceeds from the event benefit the Breast Cancer Fund as well as a local organization, in this case Families First.
The event began with a warm welcome by Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts, which was followed by eleven short films by, for and about women. LUNAFEST was established by LUNA, the makers of the Whole Nutrition Bar for Women, to promote women filmmakers, raise awareness for women’s issues, and support worthy women’s nonprofit organizations.
The mission of Families First, a volunteer driven non-profit, is to provide free mentoring and social support services to all Rhode Island women who are struggling with depression or isolation during pregnancy or postpartum. By strengthening family foundations, Families First helps to build stronger communities.
At the core of the program are dedicated and compassionate mentor moms who volunteer their time and provide non-judgmental support to their matched moms in need. The relationship that develops between these women is extraordinary and epitomizes the term “mothering the mother” or as Families First calls it, Moms Helping Moms.
