Ocean State Circus Performers—a group of performers and artists based in Providence—are offering a children’s Introduction to Circus Arts course March-April 2009.

While one will not see any bearded ladies, or learn how to become one, the group provides an engaging service for the local community. The Ocean State Circus Performers wish to share their crafts with those willing to learn and have fun. In addition to courses like the introductory class, the group offers their love of what they do through workshops on yoga, movement and balance, and free community events as a way to inspire others.

The men and women of the group are a far cry from any stereotypes of the traditional circus—each member having mastered one or more performance skill. But the classes and workshops offered go well beyond juggling and stilt walking and work to foster other skills that go hand in hand with performing such as movement and balance.

Those enrolled in the course will be taught a variety of circus and social skills through exploration, games, and activities. Students will be given the opportunity to experience many circus tools such as juggling balls, spinning plates, walking on kids’ stilts, and much more. The class will also prepare one for more advanced courses. Classes instructed by the Ocean State Circus Performers are the perfect outlet for those wanting to perform, learn new skills, and those just looking to have some fun.

Dates of the course are March 28th, April 4th, April 11th, April 18th at the Feinstein Scholar Dance Academy at 2145 Broad St., Cranston, RI.
