Kilmartin: Archambault Should Clarify Statements Regarding DEM Traffic Stop

September 10th, 2010 · No Comments

“Councilman Archambault should know better than to berate an officer for doing his job.”

Pawtucket, RIAttorney General Candidate and former Pawtucket Police Captain Peter Kilmartin released the following statement today regarding Steve Archambault’s comments about a DEM officer that pulled him over in 2008:

“In 2008, Councilman Archambault was pulled over by a DEM officer for driving a car with ‘stolen’ plates and ‘speeding.’ The account further shows that in an enraged rant, he disrespected the officer for pulling him over – even mentioning in a seemingly aggressive manner that he would call the officer’s boss and that Archambault was running for Attorney General in two years and ‘will win’(1).”

“In responding to a written incident report from a Rhode Island law officer, Councilman Archambault has misled the public and disrespected law enforcement and peace officers throughout the Ocean State.   After his campaign falsely denied that the incident even occurred (2), Councilman Archambault has since accused the officer of conducting an illegal traffic stop (3), though all evidence points to the contrary.  Clearly, the officer could legally pull over a car with reported stolen plates and the officer did not ‘make up’ that the plates were reported stolen.  Councilman Archambault should know better than to berate an officer for doing his job.”

“I am proud to have served for 24 years alongside hundreds of men and women who have made it their life’s mission to keep Rhode Island families safe from harm. Unfortunately, during Councilman Archambault’s five short years as a police officer in Jamestown, he didn’t learn the simple lesson that you should treat others – including law enforcement officials – with respect.”

BACKGOUND

The peace officer pulled Councilman Archambault over for speeding and driving a car with a stolen license plate. According to Rhode Island General Law 12-4-7, a peace officer has the authority to enforce laws against someone who is expected of committing a felony offense – which in Councilman Archambault’s case, was within the jurisdiction of the peace officer.
