Secretary of State A.Ralph Mollis welcomed Lincoln High School teacher Grace Small and social studies students to the State House last Wednesday. His office gave the students a backstage tour that included stops at the Bell Area, where Rhode Island’s replica of the Philadelphia Liberty Bell is displayed; the State Room, where Gilbert Stuart’s famous portrait of George Washington hangs; and the Royal Charter of 1663. Granted by King Charles II, the charter guaranteed Rhode Island settlers freedom of religion and the freedom to govern their own colony. The Secretary of State’s office offers free State House tours Monday through Friday. For more information, visit sos.ri.gov.
