Shallcross Smith Appointed To Small Business Committee

February 5th, 2010 · No Comments

STATE HOUSE – Rep. Mary Ann Shallcross Smith has been appointed to the House Committee on Small Business for the 2010 legislative session.

The appointment was announced this week by Speaker of the House William J. Murphy.

The House Committee on Small Business is a new committee, created this year by the House of Representatives to handle legislation of particular concern and interest to the state’s small business community, which accounts for most employment in the state.

Representative Shallcross Smith (D-Dist. 46, Lincoln, Pawtucket) has a particular interest in the work of this committee, as she is the owner, founder and CEO of a successful small business, Dr. Day Care Child Development Center for Learning and Play. She began the business as a home-based child care center in 1972. It now has four locations throughout northern Rhode Island.

“Small businesses are the backbone of Rhode Island’s economy. Nurturing and supporting them is going to be key to reducing our unemployment rate and bringing our economy back to health,” said Representative Shallcross Smith.

Representative Shallcross Smith, who is in her first term in the House, also serves on the Labor and Constituent Services Committees in the House.
