JMW School Community Reaches Out to Haiti

January 30th, 2010 · 1 Comment

The students and staff at Jacqueline M. Walsh School for the Performing and Visual Arts were deeply concerned and affected by the horrible disaster in Haiti. The day after the earthquake, the school came together and brainstormed ways to help the cause. Our Winter Ball was scheduled to happen the next day at the Pawtucket Country Club and the student body collectively decided to donate all the proceeds from the dance to the victims.

But, we felt like we could contribute even more. The following week the entire school participated in a fun competition called Penny Wars. Each class was given a jar to put their pennies in, including an extra jar for the faculty.
Pennies and paper money counted as positive points for your team, but your opponents could put silver money into your jar. Silver coins took points away from your team. This heated battle took place over four days and accumulated more money than we ever expected. The Senior Class came in first place, followed by the Sophomores, then Juniors, Faculty, and in last place were the Freshman. Penny Wars brought in $936.01. We also received $200.00 from the Winter Ball. That makes a total of $1136.01 that will be donated to the people in Haiti. We are extremely proud of our hard work and wish the best for their country.
