The Rhode Island Post Card Club holds its next meeting on Sunday January 31st from 9 AM to 2 PM at the Knights of Columbus, 1 Volturno Street in North Providence. The hall is easily accessible from Route 95 by taking the Branch Ave. exit and heading west. Turn right at the third traffic light onto Charles St. and then left onto Volturno.
The first of two special presentations on the Schleswig-Holstein region of Germany will be given at 12:30 by club member Reinhard Wohlgemuth. Many Americans’ knowledge of Germany is limited to Munich and the Alps, the Rhine River and maybe the port city of Hamburg in the north. But there is more to the country than that. Reinhard was born and raised north of Hamburg and would like to introduce you to the beauty of his home state by telling about his youth through postcard images. He enjoys sharing his knowledge about postcards and history; in his presentation he will tell you about the land and some of the customs he grew up with that seem strange or even dangerous today. Part I of his presentation covers the first 4 years of his life in Raisdorf, a small village near Kiel. He will also introduce you to the region around his second home, Timmdorf. Reinhard’s presentation will also be a reminder how much has changed over the past 50 years.
Post cards of all descriptions including town views and holiday greetings will be available for sale including antique Valentine’s Day cards, which you can send to someone special for about the same cost as a new card. There is no admission charge.
