Travel back to the 1860’s in the Ocean State!
Almost 150 years ago Rhode Island was America’s economic engine, powered by textile manufacturing, and expanded through the development of other related industries and services.
The 1860’s were also a decade in national affairs where social and political divisions heightened between northern and southern states that lead to our national Civil War. It also saw the rise to prominence of one of our country’s greatest leaders, Abraham Lincoln, who served as our 16th President (1861-1865)
On the campaign trail in 1860 Mr. Lincoln made two memorable stops in Rhode Island, including one in the Blackstone River Valley in Woonsocket, that were widely attended at the time.
As part of the ongoing commemoration of Mr. Lincoln’s birth bicentennial, the Museum of Work & Culture at Market Square, Woonsocket, RI is presenting a special exhibit Rhode Island in the Time of Lincoln on display running November 1, 2009-February 14, 2010.
Presented by the Rhode Island Historical Society, see perspectives of the people and places of the “Ocean State” at the time of Mr. Lincoln’s visits.
More information on the exhibit and the Museum of Work & Culture is available by calling 401-769-9675 or going to the web at www.rihs.org
