National Spinning & Weaving Week Kicks Off Textile and Guild Classes
Pawtucket, RI: Slater Mill, located at 67 Roosevelt Avenue in the heart of Pawtucket, will host a free celebration of National Spinning and Weaving Week, from noon to 5 PM on Sunday, October 4, 2000.
Slater Mill’s annual celebration Spin, Weave, Knit, Quilt draws a variety of fiber artists and craftspeople including spinners, weavers, quilters, felters and knitters from various communities across Southeastern New England. There will be numerous demonstrations in each discipline, including fiber presentations each hour, interactive activities for children, and educational exhibits for all.
Come to Slater Mill and watch the best fiber artists from our communities at work. Learn new techniques, mingle with others in the Southeastern New England community interested in fiber arts, or simply enjoy the afternoon at this historic site on the banks of the Blackstone River.
Spin, Weave, Knit, Quilt is an opportunity for the flourishing fiber arts community to come together to support the development of the Community Guild Studios, a fine craft and fiber arts center serving the people of Rhode Island and Southeastern New England. Opened in November of 2008, this major initiative is unique in the country. CGS links Slater Mill, a national historic landmark and the birthplace of textile manufacturing, with Rhode Island’s growing community of talented, professional craftspeople.
If the Spin, Weave, Knit, Quilt celebration sparks your interest in fiber arts, we encourage you to sign up for the Fall/Winter classes hosted by Slater Mill’s Community Guild Studio! The upcoming Fall/Winter class season is shaping up to be the most exciting yet, featuring classes such as Chair Caning led by local artist Steven Emma; Basket Making with Attleboro artist Ann Morris; and Washfast Acid Yarn Dyeing with University of Rhode Island teacher and fiber arts enthusiast Jan Doyle. For more information, click on the CGS schedule on the Slater Mill website at www.slatermill.org.
The Spin, Weave, Knit, Quilt celebration is free and open to the public and will be held mostly outdoors. In case of inclement weather activities will be moved indoors to the Pawtucket Visitor Center, at 175 Main Street, Pawtucket (across the street from Slater Mill).
