Pawtucket – Your Hometown

By Ken McGill, Registrar of VotersCity of Pawtucket

Every season, throughout the year, the Pawtucket Parks & Recreation Department puts out its quarterly program. The summer 2009 program just came out and it is full of things residents can do for little or no money. In addition to programs from parks & recreation there is a whole section of all the goings on at the Pawtucket Public Library.

Would you like to take an outdoor exercise class in Slater Park? We have them including toning, Tai Chi and Pilate’s. The classes begin in June and are held at either the Daggett House or the Boat House. There is a fee for these classes.

Want to cool down this summer? From July 1 – August 13 you can take a dip in the city run pool at Veterans Park. The pool, which was recently refurbished a few years back thanks to a grant from Congressman Patrick Kennedy, is open daily and costs just $1.00 per day for adults and .50 cents per day for children under 12.

Looking to do something on a warm summers night with the kids? Head over to Slater Park every Tuesday night from July 7th through August 18th at 6:30 p.m. for the Tuesday Evening Arts in the Park Children’s Performance Series. From storytellers to jugglers this is a series you and your kids are going to enjoy.

Ready for some adult entertainment? How about stopping by the Thursday Evening Arts in the Park Concert Series? Every Thursday night from July 2nd to August 20th, at 6:30 p.m., a variety of groups will perform an array of music. From The Remnants to the John Connors & the Irish Express there is music for everyone to enjoy.

The city will once again offer a free day camp for all Pawtucket residents between the ages of 6 and 13 years old. Registration for this free camp begins on June 1st at the Slater Park Carousel at 8:30 a.m. and space is limited. This program includes supervised activities and a free lunch!

You don’t know how many times I have heard people complain that there is nothing to do in Pawtucket. Above I have just outlined a handful of the activities that are going to take place in our city this summer. These are in addition to the usual activities that parks and recreation put on throughout the year – take a spin on one of the oldest Looff carousels in the world for just .25 cents or take a stop by Daggett Farm and play horseshoes. There are so many things to do this summer and I haven’t even outlined the Sunday Night Concert Series downtown or things going on at the library.

So get you copy of the Pawtucket Parks & Recreation Summer Program 2009 from city hall or the parks office in Slater Park because summer fun is part of – Pawtucket Your Hometown.

-           Until next week.
